If we say Zombie, you probably think of horror movies or Halloween costumes.
But it’s also the name of a legendary rum-based cocktail, created by Donn Beach in 1934, the founder of the famous Don the Beachcomber restaurant in California and a pioneer of the tiki style.
The original Zombie recipe is anything but simple due to the number of ingredients it contains. It combines no less than three different rums, a hint of absinthe, lime juice, grenadine, to name just a few.
This cocktail is an explosion of tropical flavors, but it is also known for its strong alcoholic punch.
For those looking for a more accessible version, here is a simplified recipe for the Zombie, prepared with the delicious Barbancourt rum.
Besides being easier to prepare, this version is also lower in alcohol, while keeping the festive spirit and rich flavors of the original.
Although this cocktail is a harmonious blend of tropical flavors, it is also often served during Halloween because of its name.
The Barbancourt Rum
The rum used in this cocktail plays a crucial role in its aromatic complexity, as only one variety is used instead of three.
Here, it’s Barbancourt rum, Haiti’s iconic spirit, that takes center stage.
Aged for 4 years in oak barrels, it is distinguished by its woody and spicy notes, bringing a unique aromatic depth to this cocktail.
How to Prepare Crushed Ice
Here’s a simple method to make crushed ice at home:
- Take standard ice cubes and place them in a clean and sturdy towel.
- Wrap the ice cubes tightly in the towel, then use a mallet or rolling pin to crush the ice.
- Once you’ve crushed enough, open the towel and check if the ice is finely crushed. If needed, continue until you reach the desired consistency.
- If you’re not using the ice immediately, put it in a freezer bag and return it to the freezer until needed.
