Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix: A Getaway in Baie-Saint-Paul

Germain Hotels has long been one of Quebec's most reliable hotel brands, and its Charlevoix property is no exception.

Located just a few minutes' walk from downtown Baie-Saint-Paul, Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix is part hotel, part farm, part food destination and part wellness retreat.

You come here to stay, of course, but also to enjoy the Nordic spa, eat at the hotel's restaurants, walk around the property or simply spend a few days without needing to get back in the car.

But this one has a personality of its own. With its different pavilions, gardens, pastures and animals, it feels almost like a small country resort right in Baie-Saint-Paul.

And the change of scenery starts quickly. In my case, all it took was opening the curtains in my room and spotting the Highland cows right outside my window.

The luggage could wait: I headed straight back outside to see them up close.

A Hotel Designed Like a Country Estate

Le Germain Charlevoix has 145 rooms and suites spread across several pavilions, with options that work for both couples and families. The property was also awarded a MICHELIN Key in 2024 and 2025, a distinction recognizing hotels that offer particularly memorable stays.

The decor varies depending on the room category, but the same contemporary, understated Germain style runs throughout, with plenty of wood and natural materials.

The rooms are bright, comfortable and thoughtfully designed, with the especially comfortable bedding that has become one of the brand's signatures.

Some rooms, including the one I stayed in, look directly onto the fields and animals. In summer, Highland cows, alpacas, chickens and other residents add a lot to the character of the property.

Eating Well Without Leaving the Hotel

The hotel has two main dining options, depending on whether you're looking for something casual or a more refined experience.

Le Bercail

For drinks or a relaxed dinner, Le Bercail serves wood-fired pizzas, tartares, sharing boards, ribs and other dishes in a casual setting.

It's also the kind of place where you can simply stop for a drink at the end of the day before deciding what comes next.

Les Labours

For a more elaborate dinner, head to Les Labours, where the cooking is more refined and seasonal, with both à la carte options and a tasting menu.

During my stay, I chose the tasting menu. Several courses followed, including confit lamb and redfish, with a clear focus throughout on local and Quebec ingredients.

Like Le Bercail, Les Labours is certified by Fourchette bleue and Aliments du Québec au menu, a certification requiring at least 85% of ingredients to be from Quebec or processed in Quebec.

The kitchens also make use of produce grown in the hotel's gardens, including garlic, squash, microgreens and Gorria peppers, while also working with several producers from the region.

A Breakfast Worth Making Time For

Then there's the breakfast buffet. Even if you're not staying at the hotel, it's worth stopping in for eggs cooked to order, smoked salmon, pastries, fruit, smoothies, Quebec charcuterie and cheeses, as well as several hot dishes.

Special mention goes to the potatoes gratinéed with Hercule cheese from Laiterie Charlevoix, which I would happily order again tomorrow morning. Few hotel breakfast buffets have made me want to linger quite this long.

What to Do at Le Germain Charlevoix

It's entirely possible to arrive at Le Germain Charlevoix and leave the car parked for a few days. The property is large and there are plenty of activities available right on site.

Depending on the season, you can walk the trails, borrow bikes, visit the farm animals, wander through the gardens or use the heated outdoor pool. There's also ping-pong, board games and several areas where you can simply sit and relax.

In winter, the setting changes, with an outdoor skating rink among the seasonal activities, while the Nordic spa remains open year-round.

A Break at Spa Nordique Le Germain

Recently renovated, Spa Nordique Le Germain is another good reason to leave some free time in your schedule.

For an access fee of $60 per person, guests can use the thermal circuit, which includes a Finnish sauna, eucalyptus steam room, hot and cold baths, a heated pool and a whirlpool.

Much of the spa is outdoors, with views over the fields and the Charlevoix landscape.

Massages and treatments are also available on site. Advance reservations are recommended.

A Good Base for Exploring Baie-Saint-Paul and Charlevoix

Despite the feeling of being in the countryside, downtown Baie-Saint-Paul is within walking distance of the hotel. You can leave the car behind and easily head into town for shops and galleries, coffee or a meal.

With a car, it's also easy to explore more of the region, including the Route des Saveurs de Charlevoix, which brings together cheesemakers, farms, honey producers, charcuterie makers, distilleries and other local artisans.

Stops worth making around Baie-Saint-Paul include Laiterie Charlevoix, Famille Migneron de Charlevoix and Hydromel Charlevoix. For another standout meal, don't miss an evening at Faux Bergers.

What to Know Before Booking

Downtown Baie-Saint-Paul is easy to reach on foot, and the Charlevoix Train station is located directly on the property.

Parking and Wi-Fi are included.

Because so much of the experience comes from the hotel's facilities and activities, I'd recommend staying at least two nights, especially if you want to include the spa and dinner at Les Labours.
