At the heart of the Thousand Islands, on picturesque Heart Island, stands a castle that looks as though it came straight out of a fairy tale.
With its soaring stone towers, beautifully landscaped gardens, and breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River, Boldt Castle is now one of the region's most popular attractions.
But behind this magnificent 120-room mansion lies one of North America's greatest love stories-a tale as romantic as it is tragic that continues to captivate visitors to this day.
A Love Story That Became a Legend
The story of Boldt Castle begins with George C. Boldt, one of the most successful hoteliers in the United States. As the owner of New York City's legendary Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, he dreamed of building his wife, Louise, a castle worthy of Europe's grandest palaces as the ultimate expression of his love.
Construction began in 1900, with more than 300 workers building what was intended to become the family's lavish summer residence. The castle was scheduled for completion four years later.
But in January 1904, just months before construction was finished, Louise died suddenly at the age of 41.
Heartbroken, George Boldt immediately ordered all work to stop. The workers left Heart Island that very day, and he never returned.
For more than 70 years, the castle sat abandoned, exposed to the elements and slowly reclaimed by nature, until the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority began restoring it in 1977. Restoration work continues today to preserve this remarkable historic landmark.
What Can You See During Your Visit?
Today, visitors can explore Boldt Castle at their own pace. As you wander through the castle, you'll discover elegant drawing rooms, grand staircases, bedrooms, reception halls, and exhibits detailing the lives of George and Louise Boldt, as well as the castle's remarkable restoration.
Be sure to take time to stroll through the gardens, terraces, and walking paths surrounding the estate. The panoramic views over the St. Lawrence River and the surrounding islands are spectacular.
You can also visit several additional buildings on the property, including the Power House and Alster Tower, also known as the Playhouse.
Built in 1899, this remarkable tower served as the Boldt family's entertainment center and featured a theater, billiards room, library, two-lane bowling alley, and several elegant lounges.
History enthusiasts may also wish to visit the Boldt Yacht House, an impressive boathouse built to accommodate the family's luxurious yachts. Admission to the Yacht House is separate from the castle and requires an additional ticket.
Please note that the shuttle between Boldt Castle and the Yacht House is currently unavailable. As a result, the Yacht House cannot be accessed from Heart Island. Visitors must reach it by road from the U.S. side or by private boat.
How Much Time Should You Allow?
If you're taking a cruise from Gananoque with a stop at Boldt Castle, expect the full excursion to last about five hours. Most cruise companies allow approximately two hours on Heart Island, which is plenty of time to explore the castle and grounds at a comfortable pace.

How Do You Get to Boldt Castle?
Boldt Castle is located on Heart Island, on the American side of the St. Lawrence River. The easiest way to visit is by joining a sightseeing cruise departing from Gananoque or Rockport.
I chose the City Cruises tour from Gananoque and highly recommend it. In addition to bringing you to the castle, the cruise showcases many of the Thousand Islands' most iconic sights, including the luxurious estates of Millionaires' Row, the Thousand Islands International Bridge, the St. Lawrence Statue, and countless small islands scattered throughout the archipelago. The onboard commentary also adds plenty of interesting historical and local insight.
You can also reach Boldt Castle by private boat or water taxi.
Passport and Border Requirements
Although Boldt Castle is only minutes from the Canadian shoreline, it is located in the United States. As a result, all visitors must present a valid passport.
Travelers who are not Canadian or U.S. citizens should also verify the entry requirements applicable to their nationality before traveling.
Upon arrival at Heart Island, passengers must clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection. On the return trip, cruises departing from Boldt Castle also complete Canadian re-entry procedures before passengers disembark in Gananoque.
Is Boldt Castle Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
The architecture is magnificent, and the setting couldn't be more spectacular. But what truly makes a visit unforgettable is the story behind the castle. You're not simply touring an extraordinary estate-you are stepping into the unfinished dream of a man who wanted to give the greatest gift imaginable to the woman he loved.
More than a century later, it's still difficult not to be moved by the story of George and Louise Boldt.
