It's hard to imagine a more spectacular setting for a hotel. Located directly on the shores of Lake Louise in Banff National Park, the Fairmont Château Lake Louise is one of the Canadian Rockies' most iconic hotels.
But beyond the view, as impressive as it may be, is staying here really worth it?
I had the opportunity to spend a few days at the hotel for the opening of BASIN Glacial Waters, its new thermal wellness experience, and took the opportunity to discover the hotel, its restaurants and the many activities available right on site.
A Hotel Right on the Shores of Lake Louise
We've all seen countless photos of Lake Louise, the Château and Victoria Glacier in the background. Is it really as beautiful in person? Yes. The postcard-perfect scenery is very real, and it takes your breath away from the moment you arrive.

But the Château's location also offers something particularly valuable in one of Banff National Park's most visited places: time. You can head outside early in the morning or later in the day, when things quiet down, with direct access to the trails and activities around the lake.

Rooms at the Fairmont Château Lake Louise
The hotel has 539 rooms and suites, spread between the main building and the newer Mount Temple Wing. I stayed in a lake-view room and, let's just say, the view steals the show.
The room itself was on the smaller side, but comfortable and well appointed, with a small table and chairs and all the thoughtful details Fairmont is known for.
If your budget allows, I wouldn't hesitate to choose a lake-view room. Here, the view really is part of the experience.
BASIN Glacial Waters: An Exceptional Thermal Experience
If there's one experience you absolutely shouldn't miss, it's BASIN Glacial Waters. Opened in September 2025, this spa is probably one of the most impressive I've had the opportunity to experience.
Between the hot and cold pools, saunas, Aufguss rituals and relaxation areas, it's hard to think of anything that's missing.
The centrepiece is the spectacular indoor-outdoor pool, with built-in seating where you can relax in the warm water while looking out at Victoria Glacier.
The experience is based on alternating between heat, cold and rest.
BASIN offers different circuits depending on what you're looking to get out of the experience, helping guide you through the various facilities, but you can also simply go at your own pace.
Plan to spend a few hours here - they go by quickly. For me, BASIN easily ranks among the best spa experiences in Canada and almost justifies a night at the Château on its own.
Dining Without Leaving the Château
In such an isolated location, having several dining options on site is a real advantage. The Château has seven restaurants and dining options, including The Guide's Pantry, open 24 hours a day and perfect for grabbing a coffee, pastry, lunch or quick snack.
For a more elaborate meal, I particularly enjoyed Fairview Bar & Restaurant and its seasonal menu. Special mention goes to the tableside-prepared tartare, which was as enjoyable to watch being made as it was to eat.
Much More Than the View
There are plenty of activities available directly from the Château, making it easy to make the most of Lake Louise.
In summer, you can rent a canoe from Voyageur Canoes, walk along the lakeshore or head straight onto the hiking trails, including the one leading to the Lake Agnes Tea House.
Guests can also book a shuttle through the Château to Moraine Lake, including early departures to catch the sunrise.

Another perk of staying overnight is being able to simply step outside at the right time to catch the alpenglow, when the surrounding peaks take on a warm orange glow.
And for the brave, you can book a guided cold-plunge experience in Lake Louise. I did it in 7°C water and, let's just say, it wakes you up!
Since tourists are rarely far away, a small audience quickly gathers around those brave enough to get into the water. Extra motivation not to back out!
Is It Worth Staying at the Fairmont Château Lake Louise?
Let's be clear: staying at the Fairmont Château Lake Louise comes with a significant price tag. You can absolutely visit and admire the lake without spending the night.
But for a first trip to the Rockies or a special occasion, staying for one or two nights lets you experience Lake Louise as more than just a sightseeing stop. You can enjoy the area during quieter hours, head straight out for a hike, eat well and actually take your time.
And since the opening of BASIN Glacial Waters, the experience feels even more complete.
