Where Are the Thousand Islands?
The Thousand Islands are an archipelago stretching along the St. Lawrence River between Kingston and Brockville in Ontario and Alexandria Bay in New York State.
Despite the name, there are actually 1,864 islands, ranging from tiny rocky outcrops to fully inhabited islands.
It can be easy to get confused by the names. The Thousand Islands refers to the entire tourism region, which includes villages, marinas, and attractions.
Thousand Islands National Park, on the other hand, represents only a small portion of the region. Managed by Parks Canada, it protects around twenty islands along with several mainland shoreline areas open to visitors.
When Is the Best Time to Visit the Thousand Islands?
The main tourist season runs from May through October, but there's really no bad time to visit. It simply depends on the type of experience you're looking for.
May and June: Spring is in full bloom, temperatures are pleasant, and the crowds remain relatively light. It's an excellent time to enjoy the region at a relaxed pace.
July and August: Summer is at its peak. Every attraction is open, and the atmosphere is lively. It's also the busiest season, so be sure to reserve your activities and accommodations well in advance.
September and October: Autumn colours transform the landscape into a spectacular display. The weather often remains mild, and the crowds thin out considerably. It's an ideal time for travellers who prefer a quieter escape.
How Much Time Should You Plan?
Allow two to three days to fully experience the region. That's enough time to take a cruise through the islands, explore Thousand Islands National Park by kayak, visit Boldt Castle, and spend time strolling through Gananoque.
Gananoque: The Best Home Base
Often referred to as the Gateway to the Thousand Islands, Gananoque is, in my opinion, the best place to stay. Most activities-including cruises, helicopter flights, and kayaking excursions-depart from there. The town also offers an excellent selection of hotels, restaurants, cafés, and local shops.

Take a Helicopter Tour
One of the only ways to truly appreciate the beauty of the Thousand Islands is from above. Flying nearly 2,000 feet above the river reveals the islands, turquoise waters, and magnificent waterfront estates in all their glory.

Take a Cruise Through the Islands
A sightseeing cruise offers a completely different perspective of the Thousand Islands. As you glide along the river, you'll pass picturesque islands and luxurious waterfront estates while guides share fascinating stories about smugglers, millionaires, and pirates who once shaped the region's history.
The cruise that includes a stop at Boldt Castle is by far the most popular, combining scenic sightseeing with a visit to the castle.
Visit Boldt Castle
Boldt Castle is the most famous castle in the Thousand Islands, and if you only visit one, this should be it.
Located on Heart Island, this magnificent 120-room castle was built as a testament to the love between millionaire George C. Boldt and his wife, Louise.
Today, after decades of restoration, it has become the symbol of the region.

Explore the Islands by Kayak
Kayaking offers a completely different experience. You'll paddle across remarkably clear water, spot fish beneath the surface, and weave between islands at your own pace.
Kayaks can be rented for a few hours or several days, or you can join a guided excursion with 1000 Islands Kayaking.
Several public islands are accessible, making perfect stops for a picnic, a swim, or a short hike.
Cycle the Thousand Islands Parkway
The Thousand Islands Parkway stretches nearly 40 kilometres (25 miles) between Gananoque and Brockville. Its dedicated cycling path makes for a peaceful ride, with beautiful river views, scenic lookouts, and several small beaches where you can stop and relax.
Visit the 1000 Islands History Museum
Small in size but rich in content, this museum tells the story of the region from the First Nations through the era of grand hotels and wealthy summer residents.
Discover the Thousand Islands Boat Museum
The St. Lawrence River is central to the region's identity, and this museum celebrates its rich boating heritage. Visitors can admire traditional wooden boats, historic vessels, and exhibits highlighting the history of navigation on the St. Lawrence. It's a fascinating stop for both history enthusiasts and boating lovers.
See a Show at the Thousand Islands Playhouse
Located directly on the waterfront, the Thousand Islands Playhouse presents a summer season of comedies, plays, and musicals. I'd heard wonderful things about it but unfortunately couldn't attend a performance during my visit because every show was sold out. It's definitely worth booking your tickets in advance.

Where to Eat in Gananoque
After a day on the river, here are a few restaurants I particularly enjoyed.
For a Romantic Dinner
Riva is housed in a beautiful heritage building with a charming courtyard patio. The menu features generous Italian cuisine, including fresh pasta, homemade gnocchi, wood-fired pizzas, and grilled specialties. It's an excellent choice for a romantic evening.
For Outstanding Fish & Chips
Just steps from the marina, Stonewater Pub is a local favourite. Its fish & chips are among the best in town, served with homemade fries and an excellent selection of craft beers.
For a Quick Lunch
Frisk is the perfect stop before a kayaking excursion or sightseeing cruise. Sandwiches, salads, pastries, and specialty coffees can be enjoyed on the patio or packed for a picnic.
For Excellent Pizza
With its beautiful garden and outdoor wood-fired oven, The Purple House is one of Gananoque's most welcoming restaurants. Alongside classic pizzas, you'll find creative seasonal specials featuring ingredients such as strawberries, butter chicken, or pulled pork.
Other great options: 1000 Curry, Pistachio Café, and Laverne's Eatery.
Where to Stay in the Thousand Islands
Gananoque offers the largest selection of accommodations in the region and makes an ideal base for exploring the islands.
A Comfortable and Convenient Option
During my visit, I stayed at the Best Western Plus Gananoque in a recently renovated suite with a sitting area and kitchenette. The hotel offers comfortable rooms, complimentary breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and parking. Located just five minutes from the marina and downtown Gananoque, it's an excellent base for exploring the Thousand Islands.
