A Winter Weekend in Québec City: The Perfect 2-Day Itinerary

Whether it’s for culture, outdoor adventures, or great food, a weekend in Québec City is always a great idea, no matter the season. In just three hours by car from Montreal (a bit longer by train), you can experience a complete change of scenery.

And staying at the Château Frontenac adds a special touch that makes the experience even more magical.

Château Frontenac - Quebec

I recently spent a weekend there at the end of January to discover the restaurant at the Hôtel de Glace (ice hotel) and enjoy the city in winter.

Here’s a perfect 2-day itinerary for a weekend in Québec City, with an arrival on Friday afternoon and departure on Sunday.

Winter time in Quebec city

Day 1: Friday – Arrival and Ice Dinner

Plan to arrive in Québec City in the late afternoon. After dropping off your bags at the Fairmont Château Frontenac, take a moment to relax before dinner.

A major novelty this year, the Hôtel de Glace is celebrating its 25th anniversary by opening its very first ice restaurant, with a menu designed by the Fairmont Château Frontenac.

The experience includes a round-trip shuttle service between the Château and the Hôtel de Glace, a much-appreciated perk as the hotel is located 40 minutes outside of Québec City.

You can choose to get there on your own, but let’s be honest—having a designated driver makes the experience even more enjoyable!

This dinner is a unique winter experience! In addition to the meal, you can visit the hotel, explore its ice-carved rooms, admire the ice sculptures, and even try the indoor slide.

On the culinary side, the menu features a three-course meal served in a magical setting, with a welcome cocktail (wine is available at an additional cost). Delicious and truly original!

Here’s a video that captures my experience at the Hôtel de Glace. You can also watch the full video on YouTube, and don’t forget to subscribe to our channel while you’re there!

A little tip for your visit: Dress warmly! While the experience is truly magical, it can get quite cold. But what a pleasure it is to return to the Château afterward and enjoy its cozy comfort.

Day 2: Saturday – Discoveries and Festive Atmosphere

After an excellent brunch at the hotel, spend the rest of the day strolling through and exploring Old Québec.

Good morning from Château Frontenac

Several activities are easily accessible near the Château, including the toboggan slide next to the hotel— a classic and fun winter activity— as well as the funicular for a scenic ride.

Strolling Through Old Québec

Wandering through the cobblestone streets of Petit Champlain, admiring the historic buildings, and browsing the local boutiques is always a highlight of a trip to Québec City.

You can also opt for a guided tour of the Château or Old Québec to dive deeper into the city’s rich history.

Musée de la Civilisation

Don’t miss a visit to the Musée de la Civilisation, a must-see in Québec City.

During our visit, we had the chance to discover a fascinating exhibition on the history of wrestling in Québec.

Apéritif and Gastronomic Dinner

To end the day on a high note, head back to the Château Frontenac for an apéritif and dinner. Let’s be honest—it’s a real pleasure to enjoy a great meal without having to go out again after a full day of exploring!

Bistro Le Sam

The Bar 1608, known for its cocktails and great atmosphere, is an excellent choice. However, be sure to make a reservation on weekends!

Otherwise, Le Sam is another great spot to enjoy a drink in a lively setting.

For a gourmet evening, you have several options:
Le Champlain: A refined gastronomic experience, perfect for a special occasion.
Bistro Le Sam: A more relaxed ambiance but still excellent cuisine. On the menu: oysters, salmon tartare, pork tenderloin… everything is delicious!

Day 3: Sunday – Final Gourmet Moments

Sunday morning has arrived, and it’s already time to leave… but not without one last breakfast!

Brunch at the Château Frontenac

If you’re in town on a Sunday and still have an appetite, don’t miss the Château Frontenac’s brunch, known as one of the best in the city.

We’ve heard that their Beef Wellington is a must-try… looks like we’ll have to come back for it!

Getting to Québec City and Getting Around

Québec City is located about three hours by car from Montreal. If traveling by public transportation, VIA Rail trains and several bus lines connect Montreal to Québec City.

Once there, if you’re staying in Old Québec, you won’t need a car—everything is easily accessible on foot.

However, if you plan to explore Île d’Orléans or Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier, a car will be necessary.
