Happening Gourmand 2024: Discovering the flavours of Old Montréal

The Happening Gourmand in Montreal is back for its 16th edition, promising once again to delight the palates of food lovers.

From March 1 to 30, 2024, several Old Montreal restaurants will be offering a three-course table d’hôte formula for $39, $49 or $59, allowing diners to (re)discover their favorite restaurants without breaking the bank.

My experience at the Japanese Kyo Bar

I had the opportunity in a pre-launch event to try the menu that will be offered during the Happening Gourmand at Kyo Bar Japonais.

In this case, you can choose a starter, three main courses and a dessert.

Of the three courses offered for starters, I opted for the miso soup, which was very good with its shiitake mushroom strips.

As for the main courses, the Bao salmon and its garnishes (marinated onions, shimeji mushrooms, cucumbers, coriander, kimchi mayo and unagi sauce) bring freshness and creaminess to the fried salmon.

This was followed by a well-seasoned tuna tartare and an assortment of makis and nigiris.

Among the other dishes that stood out around the table, the udon noodle dish with mussels and shrimp and deglazed with sake was a unanimous favorite, with its rich, creamy texture.

The yuzu tart chosen for dessert rounded off the meal on a fresh note.

With hearty, generous portions and fresh, tasty flavors, this is a very good menu.

Brunch has not been forgotten

Brunch lovers will be delighted to learn that two-course menus are available on weekends from $29 during the Happening Gourmand.

And to start the day in a festive mood, some establishments also offer a “boozy brunch” formula, to accompany the meal with unlimited mimosas.

The following restaurants offer brunch menus: Gaspar, Modavie, Vieux-Port Steakhouse, Brasserie 701, Méchant Boeuf, Pincette, Jacopo and Maggie Oakes.
