Cooking classes: learn the art of pasta and pizza at Joiea Sociale

Update 2024: This restaurant is permanently closed.

Do you dream of making your own pizzas with your favourite toppings, and of making pasta and gnocchi without turning the kitchen into a floured battlefield?

Maybe it’s easier than you think!

There are a multitude of cooking classes and culinary demonstrations of all kinds, but a great new offer has just been added to the whole range: classes at the Joiea Sociale restaurant.

Joiea Sociale is a new Italian restaurant at the crossroads of Griffintown and Old Montreal, on rue Wellington, where you can go for lunch, dinner and, above all, the apéritivo, where appetizers are offered with the purchase of drinks between 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm.

3 course formulas

The concept of these classes is simple: learn cooking techniques with a glass in your hand, in a friendly atmosphere and, above all, with your hands in the dough!

Courses at Joiea Sociale are offered in 3 formats: basic practical courses, specialty practical courses and master classes.

There are between 5 and 12 participants per class (24 for masterclasses), where you learn, among other things, the art of pizza, homemade pasta and gnocchi.

It’s the perfect place to learn these cooking techniques, and because the classes are held in such an intimate, friendly atmosphere, it’s ideal for private events with work, friends or, for example, a birthday or bachelorette party.

My experience

So how does a course work in practice? I had the opportunity to attend a pizza class at the beginning of July.

In small groups, with a glass in hand, we learned how to make the dough from a to z, the techniques for kneading and shaping it, and the mistakes not to make when garnishing it.

It all culminated in a banquet where everyone enjoyed their pizza, exchanged tips to taste everything, and made some great new acquaintances.

After a course, you’ll also leave with a gift bag containing the recipes you’ve prepared, as well as a few accessories and products related to the course.

The advantages of Joiea Sociale cooking classes

In my opinion, the Joiea Sociale courses have three advantages over what is offered elsewhere:

  1. The courses are hands-on workshops. I’ve learned a lot of tricks, and there’s no better way to learn than to make a dish yourself.
  2. The number of participants (between 5 and 12 per class, 24 for master classes, which are demonstrations). Since there weren’t many of us, the chef Natalia Machado who was teaching the class had time to drop in on each of us, advise us on the texture of our pasta, our kneading techniques and answer any questions we might have.
  3. Value for money. There are very few courses in this price range where you can cook for yourself.
